Murray Edwards College is enhancing bedrooms for conference delegates and B&B guests with poster reproductions of some of its resident art collection which has recently received formal accreditation from Arts Council England.
Murray Edwards College houses the New Hall Art Collection – the second largest collection of works by women in the world – and we have chosen several of the artworks to display in a selection of our bedrooms, as well as making the posters available for purchase by visitors.
The idea for this followed a recent successful audit by Visit England which, for the third consecutive year, awarded us three star Campus Accreditation for its accommodation, facilities and customer service. The Visit England Assessor suggested that the College might consider adding further to the appeal of its bedrooms with wall hangings.
Freya Vaughan, Marketing & Events Officer said: “We are always looking to improve our offering and realised that the solution was available right on our doorstep. With so many amazing artworks to choose from, we began selecting a few to reproduce with the help of our Curator Eliza Gluckman.”
The four artworks are: Large Plait No 1 by Sarah Cawkwell; Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Suzanne Treister; Ascending Form (Gloria) by Barbara Hepworth DBE; and Balinese Dancers by Milein Cosman.
The New Hall Art Collection is located throughout our contemporary College, which is light and airy, providing a spacious setting for the paintings, drawings and sculptures. Artworks already feature in many of the meeting spaces and public areas such as breakout rooms, areas for catering and networking and in the spectacular Dome dining hall – and now in the bedrooms too.
Eliza added: “The New Hall Art Collection ranges from collage, painting and drawing to sculpture, film and photography. It is an open collection we actively collect – over the last six months we have been offered generous donations by established and emerging artists.
“In terms of well-known artists we have works by Maggi Hambling and Dame Paula Rego – both of whom are Honorary Fellows of the College – as well as works by Tracey Emin, Bridget Riley, Gillian Ayres and Dame Elisabeth Frink.”
An Art Tour, conducted by Eliza, is also available to private parties by prior arrangement.
All posters are A2 in size and cost £10 each, of which a proportion is donated to the New Hall Art Collection.
